The Leuven Climate City Contract includes concrete commitments to breakthrough projects as well as pledges from partners to do everything necessary to also drastically reduce CO₂ emissions in future projects. 29 organizations and companies committed to doing everything within their power to achieve the greatest possible positive societal impact, more specifically by adhering to the following 10 guiding principles for radical climate action in all their activities and projects.
1. Together or Not at All
We adjust what is within our control. We leverage our influence wherever we can. We proactively pursue collaboration and constructive interaction, responding positively to calls for cooperation.
2. Focus on Impact
We give priority to projects and processes that ultimately result in the greatest emission reductions. We clearly articulate this focus in our own sustainability strategies.
3. Social and Fair
Our approach is guided by the principle that greater emissions entail greater responsibility. In our projects, we consider how to create opportunities for those with limited financial means.
4. Financially anchored
We implement climate budgeting. We choose sustainable options for our own financing and support the financing of the transition according to our capacity.
5. Transparent
We are transparent about our commitments. We openly communicate about the progress of our projects.
6. Buildings as a Key to Sustainability
For major construction projects, both new constructions and renovations, we make a resolute choice for fossil-free energy supply. We also examine whether these solutions can help reduce emissions beyond the project site itself.
7. Focus on Material Use
We reduce indirect emissions through alternative material choices and increased reuse.
8. More Locally Produced Energy
We install more solar panels on our rooftops. For major construction projects, we systematically explore green heating options.
9. Clear Mobility Choices
We make decisions that clearly result in less travel, more active mobility, and cleaner vehicles.
10. Climate-Resilient
We create more space for water and greenery on our premises to mitigate heatwaves, flooding, and other forms of local climate impact.
