A social restaurant that welcomes everyone
De RuimteVaart is a social organisation committed to inclusion, affordability and community. A key part of its work is its social restaurant, where visitors can enjoy a warm, high-quality meal at a low cost.
At the heart of the restaurant is its buffet concept, which is an excellent example of how food can support social inclusion, sustainability and cultural diversity.
Affordable and accessible for all
The social restaurant operates a two-tier pricing system, ensuring that everyone is welcome regardless of their financial situation.
Visitors can choose between:
- a fixed meal with soup for €4, or
- the buffet for €2.50 for those facing financial hardship.
For these modest prices, guests receive a nutritious and complete meal.
The pricing system removes financial barriers while creating an inclusive atmosphere without stigma or distinction between visitors. As a result, the restaurant remains a place where everyone feels welcome, valued and respected.
A fresh and varied buffet every day
The buffet is prepared fresh each day and changes regularly, giving visitors the opportunity to discover new dishes.
One day's hot buffet, for example, might include:
- macaroni;
- rice with vegetables;
- potatoes;
- roasted carrots and parsnips;
- mushrooms;
- couscous with tagine and chicken.

Alongside the hot dishes, guests can enjoy a cold buffet featuring pasta salad and fresh vegetables such as cucumber, tomatoes, carrots and lettuce.
This wide variety creates balanced meals while appealing to a broad audience.
As one visitor put it:
"It's always different, with plenty of variety. I've discovered lots of new dishes."
Encouraging plant-based choices
Although the buffet is not entirely vegetarian, it always offers a wide range of vegetarian dishes.
Rather than telling people they should eat less meat, De RuimteVaart makes plant-based choices easy and appealing. Visitors are naturally encouraged to explore delicious vegetarian options without feeling pressured.
This simple approach supports both healthier eating habits and greater environmental sustainability.
Fighting food waste
Sustainability is another cornerstone of the restaurant's approach.
De RuimteVaart makes use of surplus food, including produce from the local fruit and vegetable auction BelOrta. By giving these ingredients a second life, the organisation actively reduces food waste while making use of fresh, seasonal vegetables from the local area.
This approach demonstrates that sustainable choices can go hand in hand with high-quality, flavourful meals.
Diversity through collaboration
One of the buffet's greatest strengths is its diversity.
The menu reflects the many cultural backgrounds of the staff and volunteers, resulting in a rich selection of dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world. Visitors are introduced to new flavours while enjoying meals prepared with care and enthusiasm.
The commitment of staff and volunteers is essential to the restaurant's success. Their collaboration creates not only an efficient service but also a warm, welcoming atmosphere where people feel at home.
Key takeaways
The buffet at De RuimteVaart successfully combines affordability, quality, sustainability and social connection.
Through its inclusive pricing model, its use of locally sourced surplus food and its varied menu, the restaurant promotes healthy eating while fostering community and inclusion.
It is an inspiring example of how a social restaurant can be much more than a place to eat, it can become a place where people meet, connect and discover new flavours, cultures and experiences together.
